Periplaneta americana “Venom/Bazinga”
Welcome to another log post! Showcasing another of my latest colonies!
Directly from Europe, the fantastically scary and very challenging Periplaneta americana “venom” or “bazinga” strain.
A black color variant with white eyes! truly impressive and scary!!
I was never a big fan of Periplaneta. They seem to me to be the ultimate roach species. The type of roaches that will truly survive nuclear catastrophes. And besides that, they are also considered to be a pest species as well being extremely fast and difficult to contain.
I wasn’t expecting to ever keep some so soon, but after my initial trials with Periplaneta japonica, I guess I sort of overcame my initial hesitations! Also after seeing the Venom colony from my discord friend RJ, I decided that I had to join the Venom Gang!
I am housing around 20ish large individuals (mixed colony) on a 30x20x30 enclosure, with sides and top ventilation and double lid.
I am keeping them fairly dry.
As you can see there are few cork slabs and a box with leaf litter. Its their original box in which they were delivered. And I noticed that the females enjoy to drop their oothecas inside. Maybe the leaves make it more appealing to them.
I absolutely love their coloration!
And I gotta say, once you get near the enclosure you can definitely smell the roachy smell of happines :D So if you are no smell roach keeper, I don’t think these are for you. Its not very strong like Rhyparobia or other species but it is noticeable.
Now I am waiting for some babies to hatch and for a continuous happy family.
One thing that is haunting me is the photo composition!
I already lost an adult inside my house (ps: dont tell my wife)…. they are so fast when decide to make a run for it… its impossible.
The male that you have seen above was on the other hand quite chilled…. he just groomed himself and posed for me ! what a sport!
Lets hope the others go as smooth as the male did!
Thank you for reading,
Cheers!
